Aylesbury United Ladies took on Barton United Park Women in some very difficult conditions and came out with a brilliant win thanks to two late goals.
Playing against the wind in the first half Aylesbury found it difficult to adjust and came under lots of pressure as the ball flew further and faster up the field from Barton. Within twelve minutes Barton had made the most of the wind and had rushed into a two goal lead but Aylesbury stuck to their task and started putting a bit of pressure on the Barton defence. However, it was Barton that made most of the running but, player-of-the-match and captain, Sarah Gerrard in the centre of the Aylesbury defence repelled many of the attacks and cleared the danger. Just before half time Aylesbury managed to get a crucial goal back as the ball was knocked forward from the back by Leigh Reed and picked up by Sarah Jackson who went on to knock it past the keeper.
Aylesbury never felt out of the game and with the wind on their side in the second half they always felt they could get a result. They had many opportunities but could not get past the Barton keeper who made some fantastic saves. With just five minutes to go things took a dramatic turn as Aylesbury's never-give-in attitude paid off. With just three minutes to go a ball was played across the area from the left and picked up by Kayleigh Mott who managed to knock it in past the keeper to equalise. That was not the end of the game though and with just seconds remaining an Aylesbury corner was played into the box and after a bit of a melée Tiana Phillips-Maynard put it into the net for the winner.
It was not Aylesbury's best performance of the season but the conditions were very difficult and they got the result they wanted to maintain their fourth place in the league.
