Not quite completing the comeback this week

Aylesbury United Ladies went into the game against title contenders, City Belles, full of confidence but missing a couple of key players. You would never have known that a couple of players were missing however, as those playing raised their game and gave their opponents a very good game in very difficult conditions. The very strong wind made it very difficult to play football and the wind ended up having a big say on the result. Playing against the wind in the first half made it very difficult for Aylesbury to get out of their own half and they were under pressure throughout but managed to defend really well without giving City Belles too many chances. The visitiors did score two though, one from a through ball that the striker just managed to get a touch to and the second from a ball over the top which the combination of the bounce and strong winds took it over the Aylesbury keeper to make it 2-0 at half time.

Aylesbury knew that the second half would be different though with the wind now behind them and they never give in. They pushed forward and made chances although City Belles dealt with the wind better and still made chances. However, it was Aylesbury who got the next crucial goal as player-of-the-match Angie Lunnon picked up the ball in midfield and played a lovely ball out to the right to Sarah Jackson who took the ball in her stride and shot past the keeper. It was a lovely footballing move and brilliant finish to make it 2-1. The second half became end to end with both teams looking to score but some good defending from both teams meant no more goals were scored until one minute from the end when City Belles managed to make the game safe from a corner.

It was another good performance by Aylesbury but unfortunately they could not get the result they wanted this week. They can go into the last two games of the season with great confidence though, knowing that they can give both title contenders a good game.
