Unfortunately, things did not start too well for Aylesbury as they started sluggish and a few of the girls looked off pace, being second to the ball, overhitting passes and missing chances. This was punished by a lively and pacey looking Woburn attack against a sluggish defence with 2 first half goals for the hosts. Then another short corner from Sophie to Talia this time paid off, when from the melee in the box Katie O popped the ball to Lois for Lois to stab the ball home. Game on. Suddenly Aylesbury had confidence and belief and they finally began to pressure Woburn who were relieved to make it to half time. The score could have been 2-2 or even more at the break, but for several near misses and an unfair off-side call to stop Katie O bearing down on the keeper.
The 2nd half started with instant pressure and a high tempo from the visitors. In an intelligent use of space, Heather collected the ball from a Sophie throw-in and produced a perfectly weighted cross-field pass to Katie O who won her one-on-one with the keeper to poke it home with her left foot. Not much then came from Woburn as Aylesbury fought hard, battled well and again created chance after chance with both Katie O and Talia shooting above the bar and coming close to win the game in the late stages.
Better stuff from the girls and the second half showed what they could do if they just believed in themselves and the players around them. Better quality passing and winning the second ball battles will see them improve as a team, but all the ideas are there and there is no shortage of players keen on getting involved. Kiera, Olivia, Korantema and the 2 debutants of Jasmine and Khadijah all deserve mentions, but the oppositions player of the match this week went to Katie O who had a lively game and was a constant threat.
