5. The Eatwell Guide - Dairy and Alternatives

Milk and dairy products are great sources of protein, some vitamins, and calcium (which helps keep our bones strong).

Much of the fat in dairy foods is saturated, which will lead to excess weight gain in older children and adults. A high level of saturated fat in the diet will also increase levels of cholesterol in the blood, increasing risks of problems like heart attacks.

Common sources of dairy include:

  • Milk- but older children and adults should aim to consume lower fat milks, such as skimmed.
  • Cheese- the amount of cheese consumed though should be monitored, as it is also very high in fat and often high in salt.
  • Soya drinks
  • Yoghurt
